Meru National Park

Meru National Park is one of Kenya’s most scenic and less-crowded safari destinations, known for its wild beauty, diverse habitats, and rich wildlife populations. Covering approximately 870 square kilometers, the park features a striking landscape of open savannah, riverine forests, swamps, and rolling hills. Established in 1966, Meru gained international recognition as the home of Elsa the Lioness, whose story was told in the famous book and film Born Free by Joy Adamson. Located in eastern Kenya, Meru National Park lies about 350 kilometers northeast of Nairobi, spanning parts of Meru County and Tharaka Nithi County. Meru’s geography is unique compared to many other Kenyan parks. It features 13 permanent rivers that flow from Mount Kenya, creating lush riverbanks lined with doum palms and thick vegetation. The park also contains open grasslands, acacia woodlands, and seasonal swamps, forming a diverse ecosystem that supports a wide variety of wildlife species.

Meru National Park is home to an impressive variety of wildlife, including many of Africa’s most iconic animals. Visitors can encounter members of the Big Five, along with other species such as giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and cheetahs. The park is also one of the few places in Kenya where visitors may see the rare Grevy’s Zebra and Reticulated Giraffe. Thanks to successful conservation programs, Meru has also reintroduced both black and white rhinos, making it an important sanctuary for these endangered animals. With its rivers, swamps, and forests, the park supports a balanced ecosystem that attracts predators and herbivores alike.

The rainy seasons from March to May and November to December transform the park into a lush green paradise, offering beautiful scenery and excellent opportunities for bird watching as migratory species arrive. Although wildlife can be slightly harder to see due to thicker vegetation, the park remains stunning and peaceful during this time.
